Farming Assistant - Grandel Center for Urban Agriculture - Urban Harvest STL

The Farming Assistant - GCUA farm will support Grandel farm and program staff to fulfill the routine operations of food production at the GCUA farm location. This summer FWS position will largely focus on assisting staff with harvest processing and distribution for the Grand Arts District free CSA program.
No farming experience is necessary. You must be able to commit to 10 hours a week (2-3 shifts) preferably including the weekly Friday produce distribution schedule and have reliable transportation to and from the farm site located in Grandel Square.

 

Urban Harvest STL believes in food rights; we grow healthy produce across a network of urban farms in the heart of St. Louis and donate the majority of the harvest to nonprofit partners serving communities with limited or non-existent access to healthy, nutritious food.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Farm assistant duties will include plant care, watering, weeding, implementing pest management strategies, harvesting, and assisting with food distribution to a network of clients within the Grand Arts District. In particular, routine duties for harvest processing will include washing, packaging, and safe handling of all produce to prepare and pack farm shares for our clients. As a result of this position, the GCUA farm will improve its capacity for food production and fulfill our mission.
 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have accepted a Federal Work-Study award for the current academic year.
  • Desire to learn more about community food systems and participate in our food access program
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work in St. Louis outdoor weather conditions.
     

Proffered Qualifications:

  • Interest or experience in organic and regenerative farming, sustainability, racial justice, health, and community development.
